GCEIP 500 Company profile

Toyota

Toyota and Lexus sold 10.16 million vehicles in 2024. That scale kept the company near the centre of the global car market while its hybrid-first strategy drew criticism from advocates of full battery-electric vehicles.

The company

What it does

Toyota Motor Corporation is a Japanese vehicle maker. Toyota and Lexus are its main passenger-vehicle brands; the wider Toyota group also includes Daihatsu and Hino. The profile follows Toyota as the brand named by TIME and WCRC, and identifies Toyota Motor Corporation as its parent rather than treating every group company as the same recognition recipient.

Across markets

Toyota’s official 2024 data records 10.16 million Toyota- and Lexus-branded vehicle sales, including 3.21 million in Asia, 2.73 million in North America and 1.17 million in Europe. This gives the company a substantial role in how people travel and how automakers invest in production. Hybrids formed a large part of Toyota’s electrified vehicle mix; their emissions effects differ from battery-electric vehicles and depend on use, electricity, fuel and manufacturing. Sales volume alone does not establish a net climate benefit.

What the record tells us

TIME selected Toyota for its 2024 TIME100 Companies list and discussed the tension between its strong hybrid business and pressure to expand battery-electric models. WCRC ranked the Toyota brand #10 in its 2025 World’s 100 Most Powerful Brands, with a score of 44/50. Those are two different forms of recognition: an editorial selection and a brand research ranking. Neither is a judged automotive award. WCRC’s 2026 ranking places Toyota at #32, but that edition is outside this project’s 2001–2025 counting window. The business case for the profile is its large international sales footprint and the strategic debate over which vehicle technologies can meet different market needs.
