The company
What it does
OpenAI is an artificial-intelligence research and deployment company. Its products include ChatGPT for consumers and organizations, models and tools accessed through its developer platform, and software for coding and media generation.
Across markets
A paper by researchers affiliated with OpenAI, Duke and Harvard reports more than 700 million weekly active accounts on ChatGPT consumer plans by the end of July 2025. The authors caution that account totals can exceed the number of distinct people. Their analysis of sampled consumer conversations found that more than 70% of messages were unrelated to paid work; “practical guidance,” information seeking and writing were the leading topics. This suggests that the service’s reach is felt in everyday learning, information and communication, as well as in offices. The study uses OpenAI product data and automated message classifications, so it does not independently establish how accurate answers were or how much time users saved. In November 2025, OpenAI said more than one million organizations around the world were paying to use its business products or models through its developer platform. That company-defined customer count indicates organizational adoption, not proof that every deployment improved productivity or outcomes.

What the record tells us
TIME included OpenAI in its TIME100 Most Influential Companies lists in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. These are four editorial placements, not judged awards. TIME says its editors draw nominations and expert input, then weigh impact, innovation, ambition and success. Its reporting also records the harder questions that have accompanied the company’s growth: safety-team departures, disputes over voice likeness, political influence and the high infrastructure needs of advanced AI. Under the current working rules, each named, in-window TIME placement is one provisional publisher-list point; none is a judged-award win. The profile does not convert usage scale into a claim that AI’s effects are uniformly beneficial.
