The company
What it does
NTPC is an Indian state-owned power company whose businesses include thermal, hydro and renewable generation, power trading and related energy services.
Across markets
NTPC Group supplied over 24% of India’s power demand in FY2024–25, according to its annual report. Group generation reached 438.68 billion units, of which 417.08 billion came from thermal plants and 21.60 billion from hydro and renewable sources. The company is expanding lower-carbon capacity, but its present electricity supply remains heavily dependent on coal and gas. Its scale therefore matters to both electricity reliability and India’s emissions pathway.

What the record tells us
NTPC’s role is central to India’s electricity system, and the balance of its output matters as much as the total. Group capacity additions in FY2024–25 were 3,972 MW, over 80% of which the company said came from renewables, but its existing generation mix remained dominated by thermal power. The 2019 sustainability award is a single reported result, not evidence that the company’s overall environmental effects are positive. The WCRC rank is discovery context, not a recognition point.
