GCEIP 500 Company profile
Mercado Libre
Mercado Libre combines an online marketplace with payments, credit and logistics. In Latin America, that combination has turned a shopping website into a much broader commercial and financial platform.
The company
What it does
Mercado Libre operates an online marketplace and Mercado Pago, a digital payments and financial-services business. Logistics, advertising, merchant services and credit connect the two sides of the platform across Latin American markets.
Across markets
The company reported 131 million unique buyers over the 12 months through the second quarter of 2026. Its platform also gives merchants access to online sales and payment tools, while its logistics network handles fulfilment across several countries. These services can widen access to digital commerce and payments, but reported user and transaction growth does not by itself establish affordability, financial inclusion or outcomes for small merchants. The company’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies Montevideo, Uruguay as its principal executive office and Delaware as its place of incorporation.

What the record tells us
TIME selected Mercado Libre for its 2021 and 2023 TIME100 Companies lists. Those are editorial placements, not judged awards. WCRC’s 2026 brand ranking is outside this edition’s 2001–2025 period and is excluded from the count. The more useful company story is how commerce, payments and logistics reinforce one another across the region, alongside questions about credit risk, consumer protection and the company’s cross-border operating structure.
