GCEIP 500 Company profile
Marriott International, Inc.
Marriott’s system covered 9,805 properties in 145 countries and territories at the end of 2025. More than three quarters were franchised, licensed or in other arrangements, so the brand’s reach is much larger than its directly operated hotel base.
The company
What it does
Marriott International operates through hotel brands, management contracts, franchise and license agreements, residential projects and timeshare. The company reports its hotel portfolio as a system that includes properties owned by Marriott as well as properties owned by outside owners and operated under Marriott arrangements.
Across markets
At year-end 2025, Marriott reported 9,805 properties and 1,779,936 rooms across 145 countries and territories. Its portfolio comprised 2,017 company-operated properties, 7,644 franchised, licensed or other properties, and 144 residential properties. Marriott also reported managing the employment of about 414,000 associates: roughly 148,000 were Marriott employees, while 266,000 worked for hotel owners whose employment Marriott manages. Franchisee and licensee staff outside that employment-management count are excluded. The hotel system therefore supports a large global workforce and owner network, but the property count is not a count of buildings Marriott owns. Its 2026 Serve 360 report records 2025 energy use of 18.2 million MWh at managed properties and 19.8 million MWh at franchised properties, plus 146 million cubic metres of water withdrawn at managed properties. It reports 1.265 million tonnes of Scope 1 emissions, 5.360 million tonnes of market-based Scope 2 emissions, and 12.451 million tonnes for selected Scope 3 categories. Marriott says the emissions, energy and water data received limited external assurance; it also changed its property-level validation method in 2025, so intensity comparisons with earlier years may not be directly comparable.

What the record tells us
Fortune ranked Marriott No. 5 in the 2025 World’s Best Workplaces list, compiled with Great Place to Work from employee survey data and requiring companies to appear on at least five regional workplace lists. The working slate treats this as one provisional workplace-list placement, not a judged trophy. Fortune’s 2025 World’s Most Admired Companies survey placed Marriott at No. 13 overall and No. 1 in Hotels, Casinos and Resorts; that separate reputation survey remains under programme review and contributes no provisional points now. The current evidence supports one provisional list placement. It does not establish a final award count or a GCEIP rank.
