The company
What it does
A.P. Moller–Maersk is a Danish shipping and logistics group. Its businesses include ocean container transport, port terminals and logistics services that connect manufacturers, retailers and other customers with international markets.
Across markets
TIME reported that Maersk shipped almost 13 million containers in 2020, including personal protective equipment and work-from-home supplies during pandemic-era disruptions. The figure describes one unusually disrupted year, not its normal annual volume. In its 2025 results, Maersk reported USD 54.0 billion in revenue and 4.9% volume growth in Ocean; it also said its terminals business set records for volume, revenue and EBIT. Its 2025 annual report gives average operated fleet capacity of 4.566 million TEU and 324 owned plus 397 chartered vessels at year-end. Those networks move goods across borders, while port and freight operations also depend on stable routes, labor and fuel markets. The company’s own climate data puts total 2025 emissions at 85.449 million tonnes of CO₂e, up from 83.528 million in 2024. Scope 3 emissions rose to 51.183 million tonnes. Maersk attributes much of the increase to rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope, more air cargo and third-party fuel and container sales; it says efficiency gains were not enough to offset those factors. Its scale therefore brings both trade capacity and a substantial decarbonisation challenge.

What the record tells us
TIME included Maersk in its 2021 and 2022 TIME100 Most Influential Companies lists. The 2021 profile focused on its role in moving essential cargo during the pandemic; the 2022 profile covered its investment in e-methanol and plans for lower-emission vessels. These are two editorial list placements, not judged awards. TIME describes an editorial nomination and review process, so both remain provisional publisher-list points in this working ledger. They do not establish a final GCEIP rank or measure company quality. The 2025 emissions figures also put the recognition in context: Maersk’s transition work is taking place alongside a large and rising reported footprint.
