GCEIP 500 Company profile
ITC Limited
A village internet kiosk became one route between Indian farmers and a national buyer. ITC’s e-Choupal model made agricultural information part of that connection.
The company
What it does
ITC is an Indian company with businesses in consumer products, paperboards and packaging, agribusiness and hotels.
Across markets
The World Bank’s account of e-Choupal describes village internet kiosks that connected farmers with market information and ITC procurement for crops including soybeans, coffee and prawns. An independent study of 303 farmers in five Uttar Pradesh districts examined how access to information affected agricultural decisions. Its findings concern that study population and do not establish a uniform income gain for all e-Choupal users.

What the record tells us
The company’s e-Choupal model joined digital information and local intermediaries to an agricultural buying network. An independent study supports an effect on farmers’ decision-making, while a World Bank document explains the supply-chain design. Neither source alone proves a broad increase in farmer income.
