The company
What it does
Equinor is a Norwegian energy company with oil and gas operations, trading activities and investments in renewable power. The Norwegian continental shelf remains central to its production, alongside international projects and energy sales.
Across markets
Equinor reported record equity oil and gas production of 2.137 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025. It also reported 5.65 terawatt-hours of power generation, including 3.67 terawatt-hours from renewables. The figures show a business still dominated by hydrocarbons while expanding power generation. Its annual report says operated scope 1 and 2 emissions were 10.2 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent in 2025, down 33% from 2015; that measure does not include all emissions from customers burning the fuels it sells.

What the record tells us
TIME’s company lists named Equinor in 2021 and 2025. Forbes Global 2000 also includes the company, but that is a size-based list and does not earn recognition points in this project. The TIME records are editorial selections, not judged prizes. Equinor’s impact story needs careful treatment: energy security and power investment sit beside production growth and the emissions associated with fossil fuels.
