Colossal Biosciences: what can de-extinction research do for conservation?

In March 2025, Colossal reported editing seven genes in mouse embryos to produce mice with woolly coats. The experiment offered a test of its mammoth-inspired research, while leaving the harder questions about conservation impact open.

The company

What it does

Colossal Biosciences is a Dallas-based biotechnology company working in genetic engineering, synthetic biology and reproductive technologies. Its research programme uses genome sequencing and gene editing to develop mammoth-inspired animals and tools it says may also support conservation. The company has also spun out businesses focused on computational biology and plastic-degrading enzymes, according to TechCrunch’s January 2025 reporting.

Across markets

The company’s reach is visible in research investment and in the debate around how biotechnology might be used in conservation. TechCrunch reported a $200 million Series C in January 2025 and described Form Bio and Breaking as existing spinouts. Two months later, the Associated Press reported that Colossal had edited seven genes in mice to combine traits already found in living mice. AP noted that the results had not yet been peer-reviewed. Researchers quoted by AP said more precise animal gene-editing could have applications in conservation or agriculture, while another expert cautioned that modifying an elephant would not bring back a mammoth. Those possible uses remain distinct from demonstrated conservation outcomes.

What the record tells us

TIME selected Colossal for its TIME100 Companies lists in 2023 and 2025. These are editorial company-list placements, not judged awards. The repeat selection points to continuing editorial interest in the company’s high-profile research and its possible uses. The evidence supports a large investment story and visible biotechnology work; it does not yet establish a measurable worldwide conservation result. That gap matters when judging the company’s impact beyond the ambition of its stated projects.
